Namibian President Hifikepunye Pohamba announced the passing of Sam Nujoma on Saturday night following a three-week hospitalization in the capital city of Windhoek. In a statement released via Facebook, the presidency expressed that "the foundations of the Republic of Namibia have been shaken" and declared a period of national mourning in his honor.

Born on May 12, 1929, in the Oshakati district, Nujoma rose from humble beginnings to become a key figure in the liberation of Namibia from colonial rule.

Nujoma was the last generation of African leaders who played crucial roles in liberating their countries from colonial or white minority governance. This group included prominent figures such as South Africa’s Nelson Mandela, Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe, Zambia’s Kenneth Kaunda, and Mozambique’s Samora Machel.

Sam Nujoma co-founded the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO) in 1960, which later became the political party that led Namibia to independence from South African rule in 1990.
