Horst Köhler, the former President of Germany, has passed away at age 81, in Berlin, Germany.
Köhler served as Germany’s ninth president from 2004 to 2010 and was widely regarded as a symbol of integrity, humility, and approachability.
As the nominee of the two Christian Democratic sister parties, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU), along with the liberal Free Democratic Party (FDP), Horst Köhler was elected to his initial five-year term by the Federal Convention on 23 May 2004 and was inaugurated on 1 July 2004.
He was re-elected for a second term on 23 May 2009. However, on 31 May 2010, he resigned from his position following a controversy related to remarks concerning the role of the German Bundeswehr in the context of a visit to troops in Afghanistan.
