The Federal Government has inaugurated the first barracks designed to provide office and residential accommodations for personnel of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Yola, Adamawa State.
During the inauguration ceremony held on Tuesday, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, emphasized the indispensable role of the NDLEA within society.
He articulated that this initiative represents a charge to personnel, underscoring that the significant investment in their welfare necessitates a renewed commitment to higher responsibility and unwavering dedication to their duties.
The facility, comprising modern administrative offices, detention centers, secure storage, and residential accommodations, constitutes more than a mere physical structure; it signifies a vital investment in human capital and reflects the commitment of the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
This initiative aims to cultivate an environment where NDLEA officers and their families may reside with dignity and security. Furthermore, Fagbemi asserted that the fight against drug abuse is essential for the nation's future, characterizing it as a struggle to safeguard youth from the devastating repercussions of substance abuse and to liberate communities from the violence and destruction frequently associated with the illicit drug trade.
He stated, "This barracks, therefore, is more than a residence; it stands as a fortress of resilience and a beacon of hope for the future of our nation."
The Attorney General assured the officers of his steadfast commitment to supporting their work, founded on the belief in the intersection of justice and law enforcement. He described this facility as a crucial element of the rule of law—ensuring the protection, empowerment, and equipping of those charged with upholding national laws.
He reinforced the notion that justice begins with law enforcement personnel, emphasizing the collective responsibility to equip them adequately for the effective execution of their duties. Fagbemi urged NDLEA officers who will inhabit the facility to remain steadfast in their service, noting that they are perceived not only as law enforcers but also as custodians of the aspiration for a safer and healthier society.
"This investment in your welfare is a call to elevated responsibility, one that demands unwavering dedication and resolute commitment," he remarked. He further indicated that this occasion should symbolize more than the commissioning of a structure, serving instead as a reaffirmation of the collective commitment to fostering an environment in which all citizens can thrive—free from the dangers of drug abuse and its associated destruction.
He expressed confidence that together, through sustained efforts and determination, a brighter future for Nigeria can be secured. The Attorney General commended former President Muhammadu Buhari, whose leadership enabled the project’s approval and initial implementation, and praised President Tinubu for bringing the vision to fruition. He also acknowledged the contributions of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa for his exemplary cooperation and support in ensuring the project's successful execution.
He recognized the support of the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, who has been instrumental in the operational success of the NDLEA.
"This project, which has been conceptualized and driven by retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, the dynamic Chairman and Chief Executive of the NDLEA reflects the forward-thinking leadership characteristic of his tenure in the agency. I take pride in noting that Marwa has revitalized the operational framework of the NDLEA, showcasing exceptional leadership and a steadfast commitment to public service delivery," he concluded.
The establishment of this modern barracks comes 35 years after the formation of the NDLEA.
