The Government of Benue State has formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with ABIS Farms Marketing Nigeria Limited, a Lagos-based entity, to facilitate the construction of modern, standardized abattoirs throughout the state for enhanced livestock processing.

Governor Hyacinth Alia, who signed the agreement on behalf of the state government at Government House in Makurdi on Wednesday, underscored the pressing necessity to elevate existing abattoir facilities to adhere to international standards. He highlighted that the current conditions in the state do not meet acceptable health and safety requirements.

During the signing, the Governor was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Deborah Selumun Aber, who reiterated the administration's commitment to implementing innovative solutions aimed at improving the welfare of the residents of Benue. She also instructed the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and Public Order, Barrister Fidelis Mnyim, to supervise the execution of the MOU to ensure its successful implementation for the benefit of the state.

Governor Alia expressed his concern regarding the inadequate conditions of the abattoirs within Benue, noting their potential contribution to the spread of diseases. He affirmed his determination to resolve this issue and expressed confidence that the collaboration with ABIS Farms would yield significant advancements. The Governor also conveyed his gratitude to the management of ABIS Farms for their decision to partner with the Benue State Government.

In his remarks at the event, Ambassador Emmanuel Usman, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ABIS Farms Marketing Nigeria Limited, characterized his company as a reliable provider of healthy food. He disclosed that the collaboration would introduce cutting-edge processing facilities, incorporating advanced automated systems for slaughtering, processing, packaging, and cold storage.

Ambassador Usman further elaborated that the implementation of the MOU would enhance abattoir infrastructure across Benue by providing essential services such as water supply, electricity, and waste management systems, thereby ensuring sustainability. Additionally, this initiative is projected to create over 1,000 direct employment opportunities and more than 10,000 indirect job prospects for youth within the state.
