Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia of Benue State has delineated the essential qualities for the appointment of the next First Class Chief responsible for overseeing the traditional affairs of the Sankera intermediate area within the state.

Governor Alia publicly made it known to the Tiv-speaking part of the state on Sunday, February 16, 2025, during the one-year Memorial Thanksgiving Mass and Reception held in honor of His Royal Highness, the Late Chief Abu King Shuluwa (Tor Sankera I), along with the disrobing ceremony for Her Royal Highness, Lady Elizabeth-Mary N. Shuluwa.

The events took place at the Catholic Youth Centre and subsequently at King Shuluwa's residence along George Akume Way in Makurdi.

Governor Alia emphasized the importance of initiating the search for a successor to the Late Tor Sankera, stating that it is an appropriate time for proactive engagement in this matter, although he feels that the loss is still too close to start seeking a replacement for his direct uncle.

He stated the crucial qualities that the next Tor Sankera must possess, underscoring the necessity for the people contesting to exemplify integrity, commitment to truth, and a readiness to defend the interests of the people. "The next Tor Sankera must be a person of integrity, a friend of the people, who speaks candidly and is prepared to make sacrifices for the community," stated the Governor.

In addition, Governor Alia revealed that he had communicated with the Tor Tiv, Professor James Ortese Iorzua Ayatse, to expedite the selection process, stressing the need for a leader who can introduce innovative ideas for development and progress in the wake of Late Abu King Shuluwa’s tenure.

The Governor acknowledged the contributions of the Late Tor Sankera, who championed several crucial causes focused primarily on maintaining peace within his domain. He further condemned the ongoing violent incidents in Sankera and reiterated his commitment to restoring lasting peace to the region.

Governor Alia conveyed gratitude to the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Katsina-Ala, Most Rev. Isaac Dugu, and the Tor Tiv, HRM Orchivirigh Prof. James Ortese Iorzua Ayatse, for their steadfast efforts toward fostering peace in Sankera.

He urges traditional leaders to remain vigilant and advocate against criminal activities in their communities, cautioning that those found complicit in such actions would face removal from their positions.

The Governor acknowledged the support the community has shown to the Shuluwa family over the past year, expressing appreciation for their solidarity during this time.

In remarks made by Hon. Justin Shaku, Chairman of the Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, and Hon. Peter Ipusu, House of Assembly member representing Katsina-Ala West Constituency, both representatives expressed gratitude to Governor Alia for his dedication to the welfare of the Sankera people and praised his ongoing efforts to restore peace. They affirmed their continued support for the Governor throughout his political journey.

The matriarch of the Shuluwa family, HRH Lady Elizabeth-Mary Shuluwa, extended her gratitude to those who honored the family with their presence and support, offering prayers for safe travels for all attendees returning to their respective destinations.
