Why a 100% Tariff Increase for Telecom Operators Will Not Be Approved

FG Will Not Approve 100% Tariff Increase for Telecom Operators

The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has made it clear that the proposed 100% increase in tariffs requested by telecommunications providers will not be approved.

This announcement follows multiple calls from telecom operators for tariff adjustments, citing factors such as inflation, devaluation of the naira, and rising operational costs.

During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Tijani acknowledged the necessity for a review of tariffs; however, he categorically rejected the suggested 100% hike. He stated, “We have made it clear that a 100% increase is off the table.” While acknowledging the operators' assertion that such an increase is essential for the stability of the sector, Tijani emphasized that it would impose an excessive burden on consumers.

He proposed that a more moderate adjustment, potentially ranging between 30% and 60%, should be considered as the government seeks to reconcile the sustainability of the industry with the affordability for consumers. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is currently evaluating the final adjustment figure.

Moreover, Tijani underscored the critical importance of maintaining affordability within the telecommunications sector, which he described as integral to Nigeria’s economic development. He also urged telecom operators to enhance their infrastructure to address the increasing demands of consumers.

In a separate interview, Karl Toriola, the CEO of MTN Nigeria, disclosed that telecommunications operators are collectively advocating for a 100% tariff increase. He remarked, “We need an adjustment of about 100%, but the government is mindful of the economic pressures on consumers.” Toriola expressed a positive outlook regarding a phased tariff adjustment, which he believes could help stabilize the sector over time. He further noted that, unlike other industries such as aviation and power, the telecommunications sector has not yet implemented a tariff increase, even while facing comparable economic difficulties.
