About NELFUND

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) serves as a significant financial institution established in accordance with the Student Loans (Access to Higher Education) (Repeal and Re-enactment) Act of 2024. This legislation was enacted by President Bola Tinubu on April 3, 2024, representing a landmark advancement towards the promotion of sustainable higher education and the development of functional skills for Nigerian students and youth.

Background

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) was instituted in response to the limitations encountered in the previous Student Loan Act of 2023, which encountered various challenges related to governance, management, loan utilization, eligibility criteria, application processes, repayment frameworks, and loan recovery mechanisms.

Objectives

The principal objective of NELFUND is to furnish financial assistance to eligible Nigerian citizens to cover tuition and associated fees, as well as living expenses during their academic pursuits in recognized tertiary institutions and vocational skills acquisition programs within Nigeria.
