Reverend Father Tobias Okonkwo, a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Nnewi in Anambra State, was tragically murdered by unidentified gunmen on December 26, 2024. His remains were interred at Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral.
Father Okonkwo, who was a professional pharmacist, met his untimely death shortly after departing from the premises of the School of Nursing, Midwifery, and Medical Laboratory Sciences at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Ihiala, where he served as a manager.
The funeral mass attracted a large gathering that included numerous priests and reverend sisters from various religious congregations, as well as family members, friends, and other well-wishers.
The service was presided over by Most Reverend Denis Isizoh, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Aguleri, and co-celebrated by Most Reverend Jonas-Benson Okoye, Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, and Most Reverend Patrick Eluke, the Auxiliary Bishop of Port Harcourt Diocese.
It is noteworthy that Father Okonkwo had only been in his position for a brief period of two months before his tragic passing.
Among the attendees from the political sphere were Mr. Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party, and Professor Stella Okunna, a former Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget in Anambra State, along with other distinguished guests.
"You are deeply cherished, and your memories will endure indefinitely. There is no need for concern; allow the benevolent presence of angels to guide you to a place of tranquility. May the soul of Reverend. Fr. Tobias Okonkwo finds eternal rest in peace." Amen.
