Some suspected internet fraudsters in the Onitsha area of Anambra State, Nigeria, have reportedly opened fire, resulting in the fatal shooting of an officer from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The identity of the deceased officer has yet to be disclosed, while another member of the commission sustained critical injuries.
According to gathered reports, the tragic incident occurred on Friday, January 17, 2024, leaving several bystanders with varying degrees of injuries as they sought safety amidst the unexpected gunfire.
The operatives, having traveled from the EFCC’s zonal headquarters in Enugu, were on a mission to apprehend a group of suspected cyber criminals when they were ambushed.
A source close to the scene, who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the incident, stated, “The incident occurred this morning. The suspected internet fraudsters opened fire on the EFCC operatives upon noticing their presence.”
The source further indicated that one officer was killed instantly, while another, who was critically injured, was transported to a nearby hospital, where their condition remained critical as of Friday evening.
The deceased officer, identified as an assistant superintendent, had recently completed a promotional examination. His identity will be withheld pending official notification of his family.
When approached for comment, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is currently underway. “Investigations into this unfortunate incident are ongoing.
The suspect is in custody, and the firearm has been recovered. Further details will be communicated in due course,” Ikenga added.
