Martha Hembadoon Tarhemba Makir was born on April 1, 1978, into a royal family in Benue State, Nigeria; Martha's formative years were characterized by significant challenges.
Raised in a polygamous household, her mother engaged in the sale of burukutu, a traditional Tiv beverage, to support the family's needs. In light of these hardships, Martha demonstrated an unwavering commitment to transcending her circumstances.
From an early age, Martha undertook various responsibilities to assist her family, engaging in hawking activities on the streets of Gboko while her peers focused solely on their academic pursuits.
Her passion for football was unparalleled, and despite the absence of female teams in her region, she trained alongside male players, defying societal expectations and overcoming numerous obstacles, including familial opposition to women’s participation in football.
With relentless dedication and self-motivation, Martha accomplished remarkable feats, becoming the first female footballer from North Central Nigeria to represent the Super Falcons.
Martha Tarhemba Makir played as a midfielder for the Nigeria women's national team, known as the Super Falcons. Throughout her football career, she played for various clubs, including Benue Queens, Kakanfo Queens, and Simbiat Abiola, showcasing her diverse experience in the sport.
She was an integral member of the historic 1998 African Women’s Championship-winning team, made history as the first player from the North Central region to compete in the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and remains the only female athlete from Benue State to have participated in an Olympic event, specifically the 2000 Summer Olympics.
Even after her retirement due to injury, Martha's influence endures. She actively promotes girls' sports through her charitable organization and The Martha Tarhemba Makir Secondary School Female Football Championship.
