On Wednesday evening, Alhaji Umar Usman Kadafur, the Deputy Governor of Borno State, and over 100 passengers narrowly escaped an air crash when a Max Air aircraft experienced a fire in one of its engines shortly after takeoff from Maiduguri International Airport.
The occurrence transpired at approximately 7 p.m. as the aircraft was en route to Abuja and encountered engine failure due to a bird strike approximately ten minutes into the flight.
The pilot and crew executed an emergency landing back at Maiduguri Airport, thus averting a potential disaster.
A representative from Max Air, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the details of the incident on Thursday morning. The representative explained that shortly after takeoff, the aircraft encountered a bird mid-flight, which resulted in one of the engines catching fire. The pilot took immediate action to ensure the safety of all individuals on board.
Following the emergency landing, passengers reportedly exhibited panic, with many choosing to retrieve their luggage and depart rather than board an alternative flight.
However, management from Max Air quickly arranged for another aircraft from Kano to transport the resilient passengers, including the Deputy Governor, safely to Abuja.
Bird strikes are a known risk in aviation, especially during takeoff and landing phases. Airlines are urged to conduct regular wildlife hazard assessments and implement bird control measures around airports to reduce such incidents.
The aircraft remains grounded at Maiduguri International Airport, where it is undergoing comprehensive repairs.
Airport authorities have assured passengers of their dedication to safety and expressed gratitude to the crew for their professionalism in managing the situation.
