Nigerians Will Hesitate to Pay Taxes if They See no Tangible Benefits in Return — FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has articulated that Nigerian citizens are likely to fulfill their tax obligations if they can perceive tangible benefits from the utilization of those taxes.

He emphasized the necessity of tax compliance among citizens, stating that there must be evident outcomes resulting from these payments. Minister Wike made these comments while inspecting the dualization project of Kuje township road.

He clarified that the financial resources allocated for road construction in the federal capital derive from the FCT's Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

Wike remarked, "No government can claim to possess all the resources required to provide services to its constituents. What is essential is to ensure that all individuals contribute their fair share of taxes."

He further stated, "Based on my observations, Nigerians are inclined to continue paying their taxes when they witness the effective application of these funds; however, they exhibit reluctance to do so when there are no visible outcomes to justify the taxes paid."

Regarding the funding for completed and ongoing projects within the city center and surrounding area councils, the minister noted, "This depends on strategic planning and judicious management of available resources."

He concluded by indicating that the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) is diligently working to enhance its Internally Generated Revenue.
