JAMB Begins Accreditation Process for CBT Centres Ahead of 2025 UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the initiation of the accreditation process for computer-based test (CBT) centers for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

On Sunday, Fabian Benjamin, the spokesperson for JAMB, released a statement stating the CBT centers that participated in the 2024 UTME without any complications should proceed to express their interest via the Board’s Center Management System (CMS) portal.

The spokesperson emphasized that all new centers intending to participate in the 2025 UTME must visit https://www.jamb.gov.ng/Pdfs/CBT_centre_requirements.pdf to review the requirements for establishing a JAMB-approved CBT center.

Subsequently, these centers are required to inform the Board in writing of their intention to engage in the accreditation process. This notification should be directed to the Registrar of JAMB through the zonal director or state coordinator in their respective jurisdictions.

The zonal and state offices will facilitate the creation of accounts for new centers on the CMS portal to support their registration process.

Furthermore, all centers must conduct an Autobot/autotest on a specified date, which will be communicated to them, as part of the preparatory measures for the physical accreditation visit by the Board’s team.

It is pertinent to note that participation in the Autobot/autotest is mandatory; only those centers that complete this test and fulfill the requisite criteria will be eligible for a physical inspection.

Benjamin remarked that only centers that meet the qualifications will receive notifications regarding the date for the physical accreditation exercise, which is scheduled for the following month.

He added that centers that do not obtain satisfactory results from the Autobot/autotest will not be revisited. Centers that comply with all outlined requirements will be endorsed by the Board for inclusion in the 2025 UTME registration and examination.

Understanding the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination

The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is a computer-based standardized assessment designed for prospective undergraduates in Nigeria. Its primary purpose is to evaluate problem-solving abilities, critical thinking, and knowledge of scientific concepts, as well as the significance of each subject chosen by the candidates. Before the year 2014, the examination was conducted using a paper-and-pencil format; however, since May 17, 2014, all iterations of the exam have transitioned to a computer-based format.

Registration occurs annually, and candidates are permitted to register for a maximum of four subjects. The only compulsory subject is English Studies, referred to as 'Use of English,' along with any three additional subjects pertinent to the candidate's intended field of study, as outlined in the relevant sections of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) UTME brochure.

The board prohibits the use of calculators, timers, or any electronic devices during the examination. Furthermore, cellular phones are strictly banned from examination rooms, and any individual found in possession of such devices faces penalties, which typically include disqualification from taking the exam. The sole item allowed in the testing environment is the candidate's Reprinted E-registration slip. Examination results are typically made available within a few days post-examination via the board's official website, as well as through SMS and email notifications. Additionally, the board disseminates results directly to the universities and institutions to which candidates have applied.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board does not engage in the preparation of candidates for its examinations by establishing secondary schools or tutorial centers, nor does it affiliate with such institutions. However, the board provides a syllabus brochure, accessible online or distributed to students upon registration. Candidates are expected to prepare comprehensively for all subject areas included in the syllabus.

Additionally, the board offers an online practice test on its official website to aid students in their preparation. Various test preparation companies have developed software and applications aimed at helping candidates prepare for the examination, and these companies are not affiliated with the board. Students may also acquire preparatory materials, including books containing questions from previous examinations, which are published by various publishing houses.
