Earlier today, Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State visited the Ikwerre Local Government Area secretariat in response to the arson attack. The incident, which occurred on Monday, resulted in significant damage to the secretariat, including shattered windows, burnt office equipment, files, chairs, tables, and other essential items.
The Ikwerre Local Government Area was among the areas targeted by unidentified individuals who set buildings on fire as newly elected council officials were preparing to assume their positions. This was exacerbated by the withdrawal of police officers who had been securing the 23 council secretariats, as ordered by the Commissioner of Police.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara, despite the security challenges, remained committed to the scheduled election on Saturday. Subsequently, the Action Peoples Party (APP) secured 22 out of 23 chairmanship positions in the state, while the Action Alliance (AA) won one seat. Governor Fubara inaugurated the 23 newly elected local government chairmen on Sunday. Unfortunately, some of the chairmen were targeted in attacks following their assumption of office on Monday.
