Fatal Misstep: Suspected Fraudster Dies After Falling into Canal While Fleeing Police in Lagos

An unidentified man has passed away due to injuries sustained after falling into a canal while attempting to evade arrest by plain-clothed policemen who had accused him of being involved in fraudulent activities in the Ayobo area of Ipaja, Lagos State.

According to a series of tweets on X.com by a user named Omorhemi, a friend of the deceased's wife, the victim was pursued by the policemen and subsequently fell into the canal in an attempt to escape.

The authorities detained two policemen in connection with the incident. The victim, who was found unconscious and rescued from the canal, was rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja GRA, where he later passed away.

The series of tweets also mentioned that the police officers, who were in plain clothes, stopped the victim on a motorcycle, accused him of being involved in fraudulent activities due to his tattoos, and subsequently pursued him.

Eyewitnesses corroborated the account, stating that the victim was unarmed and attempted to move away peacefully before the officers began pursuing ultimately causing him to slip and fall into the canal.

In response to the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the authorities were actively investigating the matter. He urged anyone with additional information to come forward and assured the public of updates on their findings.

Omorhemi shared an update, confirming the victim's passing and the detention of two officers allegedly involved in the incident.

The deceased's wife reportedly visited the police station to file a report, and two officers were subsequently detained with the assistance of eyewitnesses and their Divisional Police Officer.

When contacted by Circleson Television for confirmation of the officers' detention, Hundeyin acknowledged the situation.
