The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a statement addressing the incident involving the alleged invasion of Urban Radio 94.5FM, Enugu.
According to the statement by EFCC's Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the commission's officers visited the radio station to invite Favour Ekoh, host of Prime Time, for her alleged involvement in a N700 million ponzi scam. However, they were reportedly blocked and locked inside the premises.
The investigation pertains to allegations against Ekoh regarding a fraud scheme involving approximately 50 victims. It is claimed that Ekoh enticed individuals to invest in a company called Leverage Index Limited, promising a 10% return on investment.
The company ceased operations, leaving the investors without returns or their principal amounts.
During the visit to the radio station, the EFCC officers identified themselves and explained their purpose to the station's general manager, Bamikole Omoyomi. Regrettably, they were allegedly held captive as the entry gate was locked.
In response to the situation, a rescue team was summoned, leading to the arrest of Ekoh, Omoyomi, and the security guards involved in the incident.
EFCC clarified that Ekoh was not apprehended while on air, and the lawful activities of the station were not disrupted.
Following the incident, EFCC emphasized its commitment to the media and expressed its disapproval of the obstruction faced by its officers while carrying out their duties.
The commission has urged the International Press Institute (IPI) and the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) to investigate the station's conduct in terms of integrity and ethical professional practice.
