The Government of Canada has announced new measures aimed at addressing population growth by reducing the number of permanent residents permitted to immigrate to the country.

On Thursday, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Marc Miller, revealed that the annual quota for permanent residents would be decreased from 500,000 to lower figures over the next three years. This new policy is set to take effect in 2025.

Specifically, the Immigration Levels Plan for 2025–2027 will permit the admission of 395,000 permanent residents in 2025, followed by 380,000 in 2026, and 365,000 in 2027.

Minister Miller explained that these adjustments aim to pause short-term population growth in order to facilitate well-managed and sustainable growth in the long term.

“The levels plan incorporates controlled targets for temporary residents, including international students and foreign workers, in addition to permanent residents,” the minister stated.

“This announcement represents a crucial step in our strategy to address the evolving immigration needs of our country.

While it is evident that our economy requires newcomers, we must also acknowledge the challenges confronting our nation and adapt our policies accordingly.”
