A multi-story building collapsed amidst heavy rainfall on Saturday morning in Benin City, Edo State, resulting in the entrapment of numerous students from the University of Benin (UNIBEN).
The incident took place on Ekhator Street, Ekosodin, a locality renowned for accommodating students.
A student, who opted to remain anonymous, informed SaharaReporters that a university rescue team successfully extricated some of the trapped occupants, although many suffered severe injuries.
The injured individuals were expeditiously transported to the hospital for medical attention.
The student stated, "The rescue team continues to search for a trapped individual within the debris. The victim purportedly made a distress call from inside the structure, appealing for assistance. Ongoing efforts are focused on locating and rescuing them."
Allegedly, the Dean of Students from UNIBEN is present at the site, coordinating the rescue endeavors alongside the university team.
As of the time of this report, the university administration has not issued an official statement regarding the cause of the collapse or the total number of individuals impacted by the event.
Nevertheless, rescue operations are currently underway.
