The National Youth Service Corps Management has affirmed that the adjustment of corps members' allowance in line with the approved N70,000 new minimum wage for workers will be determined by the Federal Government.
Caroline Embu, the acting Director of the Information and Public Relations unit of the NYSC, communicated this information on Tuesday.
President Tinubu signed the new minimum wage bill into law on July 29, 2024, after negotiations with organized labor. Speculations about the new pay for corps members emerged following the approval of the minimum wage, with claims of a directive to increase account capacity to receive over N50,000.
However, the NYSC refuted this, stating that no directive had been received from the relevant government sector responsible for wage matters. The review of the allowance is in the hands of the Federal Government, and there is currently no change in corps members' allowances.
The acting spokesperson stressed that any increase in allowance is contingent upon the decision of the Federal Government, not the NYSC. Therefore, the exact amount of the Federal Government's payment to corps members remains uncertain at this time.
