Nigerians Struggling To Survive - Muslim Leaders to Tinubu

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has issued a message directed to President Bola Tinubu, urging immediate action in response to the challenges faced by Nigerians due to the impact of the Federal Government's economic reforms.

The NSCIA, representing Nigerian Muslims under the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, expressed its sympathy for the governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Zulum, the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Umar, and the people of the state following a tragic flooding incident that resulted in loss of lives, injuries, and significant property damage.

In light of the ongoing economic reforms and the recent disaster, the NSCIA emphasized the urgent need for enhanced support and intervention from the federal and Borno State governments, including the deployment of emergency management agencies and the North East Development Commission to effectively manage the aftermath of the disaster and alleviate the sufferings of the affected population.

The NSCIA also called upon governmental and non-governmental entities, both local and international, as well as compassionate individuals, to offer assistance to the people of Maiduguri by providing relief materials and services, emphasizing the collective responsibility to alleviate the hardships caused by the flooding.

The flooding in Maiduguri has resulted in significant displacement and distress among residents, with many individuals and families in urgent need of fundamental necessities such as food, water, and shelter. The collapse of Alau Dam has led to severe inundation in various areas, hindering access to essential provisions and necessitating timely humanitarian responses to mitigate the developing crisis.

While the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has declared a state of emergency and the Federal Government has allocated N3 billion for humanitarian aid, the slow distribution of assistance has exacerbated the challenges faced by the affected population, raising concerns about a potential food crisis and emphasizing the critical need for immediate relief efforts.

Amidst assurances from the Borno State government regarding the distribution of food and relief materials, the urgency of the situation necessitates swift and effective action to address the pressing humanitarian needs of the affected communities, particularly in Maiduguri, where thousands of individuals are enduring profound deprivation and require substantial support.
