ABOUT FCFMT:
The Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology, situated on Victoria Island in Lagos, Nigeria, is an accredited higher education institution under the jurisdiction of the National Board for Technical Education. Originally established in 1969 as the Federal School of Fisheries, the institution was dedicated to providing vocational training for Nigeria's in-shore fishing fleet. In 1992, it transitioned into a technological institution.
The college offers a range of courses, including fisheries technology, general science, marine engineering, nautical science, and Maritime Transport and Business Management. With accommodation capacity for approximately 450 students, the college is equipped with two hostels.
The institution is overseen by a provost who reports to the Minister of Agriculture. In 2009, Samuel Azikwe Zelibe, former head of the Fisheries Department at Delta State University, assumed the position of provost. In 2010, the provost raised concerns about the inadequacy of funding to meet the college's basic needs and emphasized the necessity for additional funds to develop essential facilities and purchase a training vessel.
The college is situated along Victoria Beach, which has experienced rapid erosion. Since its commissioning in May 1993, the beach has undergone significant reduction, prompting the construction of protective measures to mitigate the encroaching waves.
