Benue Politician's wife Uses House as Collateral for Loan, Leading to his Eviction

A former governorship candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, in the 2023 Benue State election, Mr. Ewaoche Benjamin Obe, was reportedly evicted from his Abuja house after his wife allegedly used the property as collateral for a loan.

The property, situated at the Sagwari Layout of Dutse, Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, was constructed by the politician. His wife, Christiana Obe, is said to have utilized the property as collateral without his knowledge.

On September 25, 2024, while en route to Benue State, Obe received a call informing him that security personnel were evicting him from his home. He returned to find military and police officers present, with his belongings scattered across the street.

Obe claimed that he had not been served any court papers prior to the eviction. He expressed disbelief that the court could confiscate his property without prior notice. Additionally, he stated that he was unaware of his wife taking any loan and was never contacted before the alleged loan.

Christiana, an officer of the Nigerian Air Force, reportedly removed some of her belongings from the house prior to the eviction. Obe alleged that the court papers served during the eviction claimed that she had lived in the duplex as a tenant, which he disputed.

A family member, speaking anonymously, expressed concern over the situation, emphasizing the investment Obe had made in Christiana's life and career. They called for an investigation into the alleged illegality surrounding the eviction.

When contacted for comment, Christiana declined to speak to the media.

The situation raises questions about property rights, financial transparency within marital relationships, and the legal processes involved in property seizure.
