ABOUT ATBU:
Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) is a federal university of technology situated in Bauchi, the northeastern region of Nigeria. It is named after Nigeria's inaugural and solitary prime minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. The university's motto, "Doctrina Mater Artium," translates to "Education is the mother of the practical arts."
Established in 1980 as the Federal University of Technology, Bauchi, ATBU admitted its first cohort of students in October 1981 for pre-degree and remedial programs, while the degree courses of the School of Science and Science Education commenced in October 1982. Subsequently, on 1 October 1984, the university merged with Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria, under the name Abubakar Tafawa Balewa College, Ahmadu Bello University, Bauchi campus. The university regained its autonomous status in 1988, consequently changing its name to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.
The university's academic framework was developed in 1980 after consulting subject matter experts from Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. The curriculum adopted had an applied nature, tailored to a technologically driven institution, a theme maintained across all university departments.
ATBU offers degrees through seven schools: the School of Engineering, Science, Environmental Technology, Agriculture, Management Technology, the School of Technology Education, and the College of Medical Sciences, covering entry-level bachelor's degrees, as well as master's and doctorate degrees. Each school is overseen by a dean/provost who reports directly to the vice-chancellor, the university's executive head. The vice chancellor is appointed by the Federal Ministry of Education upon the governing council's recommendation.
