In the ongoing 2024 Olympics in Paris, world champion Tobi Amusan secured her place in the 100-meter hurdles semi-finals on Wednesday. With a time of 12.49 seconds, Amusan led the group of eight athletes, followed by Alaysha Johnson of the United States with 12.61 seconds, and Janeek Brown of Jamaica with 12.84 seconds.
Despite being a strong contender for the gold medal, Amusan faces tough competition from athletes such as Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas, Alaysha Johnson of the USA, world champion Danielle Williams, and reigning Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico.
The semi-finals are scheduled for Friday, August 9, with the final taking place on the penultimate day of the athletics event, Saturday, August 10. Amusan, aged 27, has displayed excellent form in the lead-up to the Olympics, achieving a season's best and world lead of 12.40 seconds in the Jamaican Athletics Invitational held in Kingston in May.
Prior to this, she set the indoor record for the African 60m hurdles twice in January and February. In March, she clinched her third consecutive African Games title in Ghana and also anchored the women’s 4x100m to gold in Accra, as well as at the African Championships in Cameroon three months later. Throughout this season, she has participated in 17 events, including the 60m, 100m, 100m hurdles, and the 4x100m relay.
Amusan, a three-time (consecutive) Diamond League winner, two-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist, two-time African champion, and three-time African Games gold medallist, has previously competed in two Olympic Games (Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020).
