Save Public Education Campaign, Nigeria (SPEC) is advocating for the unconditional release of Comrade Michael Lennin and other activists who were detained alongside him during the recent nationwide EndBadGovernance protests.
SPEC alleges that Lennin, an educational rights activist, and others were apprehended by security agencies on Monday, August 5th, 2024. In an official statement released by SPEC's convener, Comrade Vivian Bello, the organization strongly condemned the incident.
The statement emphasized, "SPEC vehemently condemns the abduction of Michael Lennin, an educational rights activist, on Monday, August 5th. Lennin is a dedicated and patriotic individual who has fervently advocated for educational accessibility for the youth and the general populace of Nigeria."
The statement further highlighted Lennin's role as the national coordinator of the Education Rights Campaign (ERC), an organization closely affiliated with SPEC. It mentioned that Lenin had been actively involved in coordinating peaceful protests in Abuja, calling for an end to governance issues in the country.
SPEC revealed that Michael Lennin, along with two other activists, Mosiu Sodiq and Sankara, were allegedly apprehended from their residence by security operatives and have since been unreachable.
SPEC demands the immediate and unconditional release of Comrade Lenin and the other detained activists, emphasizing that they have not committed any offenses. The organization expressed concern over the alleged state-sponsored repression against civic space and urged that the detainees be released or charged through legal means.
