The Russian Embassy in Nigeria has refuted any association with a group of demonstrators in northern Nigeria who were observed brandishing Russian flags.
Earlier reports from CIRCLESONTV indicated that protesters in certain regions of the country were observed marching in the streets, displaying Russian flags and reciting chants, while others carried placards bearing various messages.
The Department of State Service, DSS, has further verified the apprehension of a Kano-based tailor involved in the production of the 'Russian flags'. The Service also confirmed the detainment of the suspect and his sponsors.
The Embassy has released a statement specifying that Russia does not meddle in the internal affairs of other nations, including Nigeria.
According to the statement, "The Embassy has taken note of the accounts in Nigerian media and the dissemination of videos and images in digital media portraying demonstrators in northern states of the country bearing Russian flags and chanting slogans in connection to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"The Government of the Russian Federation, as well as any Russian officials, are not implicated in these activities and do not orchestrate them in any manner.
"Once again, we stress that Russia abstains from intervening in the domestic affairs of foreign states, including Nigeria. The actions of certain protesters in hoisting Russian flags are individual choices, and they do not convey any official position or policy of the Russian Government on the matter.
"We hold the Nigerian democracy in esteem and consider peaceful demonstrations compliant with Nigerian law as an expression of democracy. Nevertheless, should these events culminate in disturbances or violent acts, we vehemently denounce them."
