Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized the administration of President Bola Tinubu for the increasing instances of human rights violations in the Nigeria.
This statement was articulated in a press release bearing the signature of his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, bemoaning the arbitrary arrest of citizens without the knowledge of their next of kin.
Atiku asserted that Tinubu's administration has failed in its obligation to uphold the rights of the people, allowing agencies such as the Department of State Services (DSS), the Police, and even the military to infringe upon citizens' rights with impunity.
He highlighted that journalists have been particularly targeted since Tinubu came into office, emphasizing that their sole offense has been truthful reporting and unveiling governmental misconduct.
Atiku also pointed out the potential for abuse within the Cyber Crime Prevention Act 2015, citing it as a tool for the unwarranted detention of Nigerian citizens. He flagged the concerning trend of enforced disappearances, noting specific incidents including the case of Daniel Ojukwu and Aliyu Sanusi.
The former vice president underscored the need for immediate action, calling on Tinubu to address human rights violations seriously to prevent Nigeria from facing sanctions from international entities.
