American-born Nigerian athlete Dubem Amene has announced his retirement from athletics at the age of 21 following the disqualification of the men’s 4x400m relay team from the Paris 2024 Olympics final.
Amene was part of the Nigerian quartet, along with Ifeanyi Ojeli, Ezekiel Nathaniel, and Chidi Okezie, that had initially qualified for the final with a Season’s Best time of 2:59.81, having finished second in heat 2.
Regrettably, their qualification was revoked due to a lane infringement by Ojeli during the first leg of the race, which ultimately led to their disqualification.
Following this turn of events, Amene, who had recently secured the national title at the Nigerian Olympic trials in Benin, announced his decision to retire from athletics to pursue a career in finance.
Having fulfilled his lifelong ambition of representing Nigeria at the Olympics, the 21-year-old, who graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Economics in June, has decided to embark on a professional career in the field of finance.
