The Nigerian Army has verified the apprehension of one of its personnel responsible for the fatal shooting of Ismail Mohammed, a 16-year-old, during the ongoing EndBadGovernance demonstration in Kaduna State.
It was reported by CIRCLESONTV that the young individual was killed on Tuesday when troops from the Nigerian army entered the Samaru community in Zaria to disperse the demonstrators. The security forces were enforcing a previously imposed curfew within the ancient city by the Kaduna State Government.
In a statement released on Tuesday night by its spokesperson, Onyema Nwachukwu, the Nigerian Army acknowledged the incident and affirmed that the officer accountable for the fatality had been detained.
The statement reads: "On 6th August 2024, troops from the Nigerian Army received a distress call reporting a large number of hoodlums gathered in Samaru, burning tires on the road and hurling stones at security personnel."
"The troops promptly mobilized and arrived at the scene to disperse the crowd and enforce the state-imposed curfew."
"Upon arriving at the scene, the hoodlums aggressively attempted to attack the troops, prompting a soldier to fire a warning shot to disperse the protesters, tragically resulting in the death of a 16-year-old boy, Ismail Mohammed."
"The involved soldier has been apprehended and is currently undergoing interrogation as of the time of this report."
