Julien Alfred of St Lucia marked a historic victory at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games by clinching the gold medal in the women’s 100m final at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis. Becoming the first Olympic medallist from St Lucia, her remarkable win was witnessed by a crowd of 69,000 spectators, a sizeable figure in comparison to the island's population of 179,000.
The journey to this triumph was not without its challenges. Alfred, a devoted Christian, faced personal adversity at a young age, losing her father at 12 and her aunt at 17.
Despite these hardships, her experience of winning the Youth Olympic Games 100m silver in Buenos Aires in 2018 proved pivotal in shaping her career trajectory.
Recounting her struggles, Alfred disclosed that her father's passing led her to briefly withdraw from athletics. At 14, she made a significant decision to pursue her education in Jamaica, a move that represented a turning point in her life. The influence of her idol, Usain Bolt, and the memory of her late father motivated her to embark on this journey.
Under the guidance of Edrick Floreal at the University of Texas, Alfred’s talent was nurtured, enabling her to evolve into a stellar sprinter. She credits Floreal not only for his coaching prowess but also for his mentorship and his empathetic understanding of her as an individual.
