In preparation for the upcoming Enugu State local council election in October 2024, the Peoples Democratic Party's state chapter has conducted the election of the party’s chairmanship candidate for the 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.

Before this, the party had elected its councillorship candidates for the 260 electoral wards of the state.

Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, extended his congratulations to the winners and commended the party faithful for their peaceful conduct during the primary elections. The recently held exercise saw a significant turnout of party delegates and stakeholders across the 17 LGAs.

Many aspirants voiced their support for the eventual winners, urging their supporters to vote for them. Notably, only two former council chairmen, Hon. Okechukwu Edeh of Nkanu East LGA and Hon. Obiora Obeagu of Isi-Uzo LGA, were returned as the party’s candidates for the forthcoming council elections.

The primary elections yielded other winners, including Beloved Dan Anike (Enugu East), Jude Asogwa (Nsukka), Caleb Ani (Enugu South), Ibenaku Onoh (Enugu North), John Ogbodo (Nkanu West), Ugochukwu Nwanjoku (Aninri), Uche Okolo (Awgu), Vita Ndu (Ezeagu), and Gregory Anyaegbudike (Oji River), among others.

In their acceptance speeches, Okechukwu Edeh and Obiora Obeagu expressed gratitude to party members for their confidence and assured them that they would leverage their efforts to support Governor Mbah’s rural development initiatives in the state.

Governor Peter Mbah expressed satisfaction with the peaceful, free, fair, and credible process and the quality of candidates who will represent the party. Various dignitaries and stakeholders also commended the primary elections and expressed confidence in the party's success at the polls.

The Chairman of the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission, ENSIEC, Prof. Chris Ngwu, who observed the exercise at Amagunze, Nkanu East, described it as “credible, free, and just,” emphasizing the commission's commitment to ensuring a level playing field for all political parties.
