The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has unanimously agreed to issue a 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government by labor regulations.
This determination was reached during the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting convened at the University of Ibadan (UI) from Saturday, August 17th, to Sunday, August 18th, 2024.
According to a source from the Daily Sun, the pivotal NEC meeting also mandated ASUU branches to conduct a referendum to decide on whether to initiate a complete strike, a partial strike, or no strike at all.
ASUU's stipulations encompass the renegotiation of the FG/ASUU 2009 agreement, remittance of previously withheld salaries, implementation of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) for salary disbursement, settlement of promotion arrears, containment of university proliferation, revitalization of public universities, settlement of outstanding Earned Academic Allowances, cessation of union leaders' victimization, and the remuneration of salaries to members in certain state universities.
The union had previously highlighted the government's commitment to integrating these demands into the 2023 budget, which regrettably did not materialize.
