Two pedestrians who were hit by a drunk driver as they crossed the expressway with their luggage were rescued by operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

Mr. Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, confirmed this in a statement on Saturday in Lagos, as per the report signed by Mr. Taofiq Adebayo, Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA.

The accident occurred near Mayfair Garden, heading towards the Epe area of Lagos, around 6:30 a.m. It involved a Toyota Camry (YAB 133 JY) and a commercial LT Bus (SMK 84 YB). The drunk driver lost control of the vehicle, striking the pedestrians as they crossed the expressway. The pedestrians suffered severe fractures on their legs and arms. The intoxicated driver then crashed into a commercial LT bus, which was dropping passengers at a nearby bus stop.

Following the incident, LASTMA's monitoring team ensured that the injured pedestrians were swiftly transported to Akodo General Hospital and promptly arrested the Toyota Camry driver. The driver and two other occupants were handed over to officers from the Elemoro Police Station. Subsequently, both vehicles were expeditiously removed from the expressway by LASTMA personnel to facilitate the free flow of traffic towards Epe.

Mr. Giwa expressed his sympathies to the victims and emphasized the significance of road safety. He urged all motorists, including commercial bus drivers, to refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol.
