Unizik: Details of the coup that ousted Ikechebelu as Acting VC

The events of the penultimate Saturday at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, have had a profound impact on the university community.

Reports of the potential removal of the acting Vice Chancellor, Prof Joe Ikechebelu, led to a significant development during the first meeting of the newly constituted governing council, chaired by Amb Greg Mbadiwe. However, the meeting was disrupted by the arrival of armed soldiers.

As this reporter attempted to enter the university, access was obstructed by a large contingent of heavily armed soldiers. Nevertheless, the reporter managed to reach the administration building, where tensions were palpable. The chairman of the council was observed arriving and exchanging greetings with the ex-acting Vice Chancellor, Prof Joe Ikechebelu before both entered the council chambers for the scheduled meeting.

Rumors had circulated that the council meeting was not scheduled for that day, and there were concerns raised about the legitimacy of the Senate meeting held the previous day. Despite objections, the Senate proceeded to shortlist two potential candidates for the acting Vice Chancellor position, a decision that was met with further skepticism due to the limited number of participating senators.

The shortlisted candidates, Professor Carol Arinze-Umeobi and Professor F. J. C. Odibo were presented for the council's consideration. However, a tumultuous session ensued during the meeting, resulting in an abrupt adjournment.

Subsequently, following the council members' dispersal, an unexpected turn of events unfolded. Amid the chaotic scene, the chairman of the council, accompanied by the previously resisted soldiers, presented an appointment letter to Prof Umobi as the new acting vice-chancellor, prompting widespread condemnation and allegations of premeditated action.

Critics questioned the lawfulness of Ikechebelu's removal and the appointment of a new acting vice chancellor rather than immediately commencing the process of appointing a substantive head of the institution. In response to the controversy, Amb Greg Mbadiwe issued a press release to clarify the events.

In the statement, he stated that Prof Joseph Ikechebelu had not been officially appointed as the Acting Vice-Chancellor, but had been overseeing the position temporarily following NUC directives and pending the council's inauguration.

He further explained the council's directive and rationale behind the appointment of Prof Carol Arinze-Umobi as the new Acting Vice-Chancellor. He emphasized the importance of a smooth transition and addressed the legal challenges regarding the involvement of dissolved council members.

The council assured all stakeholders that its actions were in the best interest of the university's growth and development and emphasized its commitment to addressing any acts of insubordination.
