Patrick Nnaemeka Okorie, widely known as Patoranking, a prominent Nigerian reggae dancehall artist, recounted the challenging journey that led to his rise to stardom. He revealed his experience of street vending alongside his father in Lagos to make ends meet.
Reflecting on his upbringing in the urban slum of Ebute Metta, Lagos, Patoranking emphasized his unwavering focus and determination to overcome obstacles and achieve his aspirations.
During the launch of the Timbuktoo Fintech Hub in Lagos by the United Nations Development Programme, Patoranking accepted the role of UNDP Goodwill Africa Ambassador for Youth Innovation, Enterprise, and the Sustainable Development Goals.
He emotionally recalled selling goods on the streets of Lagos, particularly on Kings Way road, emphasizing the personal significance of his journey and the fulfillment of his aspirations.
“I hawked on the streets of Lagos with my father. Many years ago, I used to sell on this street [Kings Way road]. It used to be a very hot spot for trading. Many years after, everything that I pictured I wanted to become, the man I wanted to become is who I am now. So when I was driving down to this place it was a little bit teary moment for me because I saw myself [on this road],” he said.
Stressing the importance of harnessing individual talents for community and continental development, Patoranking advocated for a unified Africa, in alignment with his philosophy of breaking barriers and fostering connections, encapsulated in his "4ps" ideology.
He highlighted his collaborative work with artists from Uganda, Kenya, Ghana, and other African countries as a testament to his commitment to fostering unity and progress.
Patoranking's acceptance of the role as the UNDP Goodwill Africa Ambassador not only symbolizes his musical prowess but also underscores his advocacy for the advancement of African youth and the empowerment of communities across the continent.
