The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority reported the impoundment of 9,370 vehicles for alleged traffic violations between January 2024 and June 2024.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Ok, the General Manager of LASTMA, disclosed that 3,034 private vehicles were impounded, comprising 1,849 cars, 549 buses, and 636 Sports Utility Vehicles, among others. Additionally, 256 casualties were recorded during this period.
Mr. Bakare-Oki mentioned that LASTMA has prioritized training and retraining its staff, with 2,000 employees benefiting from both internal and external training. Collaborations with the Nigerian Police and independent consultants have focused on developing leadership skills, emotional intelligence, customer care, and incidents management.
In an effort to enhance service delivery, the authority plans to rebuild public confidence, particularly in the area of public relations. Initiatives such as launching a toll-free call center that accommodates English, Yoruba, and Pidgin languages will enable LASTMA to receive feedback from residents.
Regarding enforcement, LASTMA has made significant efforts to improve traffic management, including the clearance of the Apapa Port area and addressing indiscriminate parking by trucks and tankers on the Apapa route, as well as enhancing traffic conditions along the Lekki-Ajah axis.
Mr. Bakare-Oki emphasized LASTMA's commitment to enhancing travel time for Lagos residents, particularly during peak periods. The authority's deployment of over 2,000 traffic equipment underscores its dedication to improving traffic management in the state.
