The former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal, has cautioned the Federal Government against any potential apprehension of the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Gregory Obi, based on allegations of supporting the planned nationwide protests by certain disgruntled Nigerians.
As a staunch supporter of Obi during the 2023 presidential election, Babachir Lawal expressed his concerns regarding the potential repercussions of arresting Obi, emphasizing that such actions would pose significant challenges for the Federal Government.
Speaking to reporters on the matter, Babachir Lawal dismissed the assertions made by President Tinubu’s media aide, Bayo Onanuga, regarding the alleged involvement of Obi and the Obedient Movement in sponsoring the nationwide protest labeled #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria.
He cautioned the government against resorting to the use of force in handling the protesters, highlighting the potential of such actions to incite disorder.
Babachir Lawal also advised against employing a forceful approach with the protesters, stating that their intentions are driven by a desire to benefit the country. He suggested that any attempt to forcefully suppress the protests could lead to widespread chaos.
He urged for the removal of Bayo Onanuga from his position, expressing his belief that Onanuga’s public statements are exacerbating tensions rather than assuaging them. He emphasized the inappropriateness of government officials insulting the populace and raised concerns about the behavior of Onanuga, expressing doubt about his suitability for his role.
Babachir Lawal further questioned the motives behind attributing the organization of the protest to Peter Obi, pointing out that such claims are unfounded. He also highlighted Obi’s propensity to abstain from responding to provocations, stressing that these factors influenced his decision to distance himself from the former presidential candidate.
Voicing apprehension about the prospect of Obi’s arrest, Babachir Lawal predicted dire consequences should such action be pursued. He posited that those advocating for Tinubu to arrest Peter Obi do not have his best interests at heart, likening their actions to self-inflicted harm.
His remarks, Babachir Lawal expressed perplexity at Onanuga’s perceived bias against the Igbo community, underscoring the positive contributions of the Igbo people to society and their significant presence in various aspects of communal life.
He characterized Tinubu as a commendable individual but highlighted the detrimental influence of sycophants like Onanuga, whom he believed hindered Tinubu from receiving sound counsel.
Babachir Lawal stressed the need for a more measured and respectful approach to dealing with sensitive issues, particularly those impacting the Nigerian populace.
