The Federal Ministry of Education has issued a circular to all Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities concerning the upcoming national protest scheduled for August 1.
The circular, conveyed through the National Universities Commission (NUC) and signed by Dr. Chris Maiyaki, the Acting Executive secretary, addresses the imperative to safeguard the well-being of staff, students, and public infrastructure within their respective domains.
Entitled "Urgent Arrangements for the Security and Safety of University Staff, Students, and Property During the Proposed Nationwide Protests," the circular acknowledges the right to protest while expressing apprehension regarding the potential for violence. It underscores the directive of the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, who has shown concern about the safety of university stakeholders and property in the event of protest activities.
In light of this, Vice Chancellors are urged to take proactive measures to ensure the security and safety of the university community, encompassing both staff and students. They are requested to issue specific statements to reassure staff and students about their safety.
