Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has cautioned the Nigerian military against involvement in the upcoming planned protest.
He emphasized that the military has no jurisdiction to comment on a civil matter and asserted that the protest organizers would not succumb to intimidation.
This warning follows a statement from the Defence Headquarters admonishing potential protesters and expressing intolerance for any disruption of public order.
Notably, the nationwide protest, scheduled from August 1 to August 10, 2024, under the hashtag #EndBadGovernance, aims to address concerns regarding pervasive hunger and inflation in Nigeria.
During a recent press conference in Abuja, the military revealed alleged schemes by nefarious elements to hijack peaceful protests and incite violence against innocent civilians and businesses.
Effiong, in his statement, urged the military to refrain from involvement in political matters and remain within the confines of their military duties.
He remarked, "The Nigerian military should abstain from intervening stating threats will not deter anyone. Military personnel should confine themselves to their barracks and avoid political entanglements."
