The Benue State Security Council has officially sanctioned the establishment of a Bureau of Homeland Security within the state. This bureau will serve to facilitate communication and coordination between the governor's office and various security agencies, enabling swift responses to security concerns in Benue state.
Governor Hyacinth Alia made this announcement on Thursday, July 11th, 2024, following a collaborative security meeting held at the Benue State Government House in Makurdi. The governor, represented by Deputy Governor Barrister Sam Ode, revealed that the Security Council has reached a consensus to appoint a Director GeneraSankaraad the Bureau, as appointed by the governor.
In response to recent attacks in the Ukum local government area, the Security Council decreed the continuation of a curfew across the entire Sankara area of the state. Additionally, all protests within the region have been prohibited until further notice.
The Council also advocated for the establishment of a Judicial Panel of Inquiry by the government to investigate the destruction of both public and private properties in Ukum during recent protests.
Expressing concern about the proliferation of illegal checkpoints in the state, the Council urged all security agencies in Benue to collaborate effectively and harmoniously to combat crimes.
Emphasizing the enforceability of the Benue State law against Matching Ground, the Security Council disclosed plans to gazette and make it publicly available. Furthermore, it directed the Special Adviser on Security to collaborate with the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism to organize a workshop aimed at sensitizing the public about the perils of illicit drugs and human trafficking in the state.
Regarding requests for land allocation to federal agencies for construction purposes, the Benue State Security Council stressed the need for extensive consultations to ensure equitable treatment of all involved parties.
Furthermore, Gloria Iveren Bai, Zonal Commander of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) Makurdi Zonal Office, confirmed that the trafficked Benue girls in Ivory Coast have been repatriated and are undergoing rehabilitation.
She announced the arrest of the individual responsible for deceiving them with the promise of employment, affirming the state government's commitment to their safe return. She advised vigilance among parents, guardians, and job seekers to prevent future incidents of trafficking.
