Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has asserted that the previous administration, led by Abdullahi Ganduje, neglected the education sector.
In a speech declaring a state of emergency on education in Kano, Governor Yusuf alleged that public schools were sold and repurposed as private shops during Ganduje's administration. He further accused his predecessor of encroaching on public school lands for private business use.
Governor Yusuf stated that upon assuming office in 2023, approximately 4.7 million pupils in primary schools across the state were without proper seating, sitting on bare floors.
Instead of addressing these infrastructure and resource deficiencies by constructing additional classrooms, providing essential furniture, and hiring more educators, the preceding administration chose to repurpose the school lands, even demolishing classrooms in some instances to make room for commercial establishments.
The conversion of public school properties into private business premises, as well as the closure and subsequent vandalism of certain schools, was cited as an infringement on communal values and a direct violation of the commitment to public education. Governor Yusuf deemed these actions as detrimental to the fundamental principles of public education.
