ASUU president, Emmanuel Osodeke accused state Governors of establishing new universities in order to receive TETFund grants

Emmanuel Osodeke, the president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), expressed concern over the establishment of state universities by governors without adequate funding.

He noted that many governors duplicate universities in their states to access funding from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). Osodeke emphasized the intended purpose of TETFund as an intervention fund rather than a primary funding source for universities, stressing that federal and state governments should bear the primary responsibility for funding universities.

Osodeke highlighted the need for a transparent framework involving stakeholders in the allocation and utilization of funds from TETFund.

He suggested the establishment of stakeholders' meetings to assess fund allocation and project execution, advocating for greater stakeholder involvement in university projects to enhance transparency and efficiency.

Furthermore, Osodeke emphasized the importance of open projects where university councils are actively involved in project management, highlighting the need to minimize external influence in project execution.
