Three (3) ABSU medical students died in a motor accident

Three medical students of Abia State University Uturu (ABSU) died in a fatal auto crash. The accident occurred less than an hour after they attended an induction ceremony for their senior colleagues at the Uturu main campus of the university on Thursday evening.

The students, two of whom were in their 500 level and one in their 400 level, were on their way back to Aba when the incident happened at the Nunya axis of the Enugu Port Harcourt Expressway.

According to Mr Chijioke Nwogu, the Public Relations Officer of the university, two of the casualties died on the spot, while the third died shortly after being admitted to the hospital. Two other persons traveling with them sustained injuries and were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Umuahia, where they received treatment and were discharged.

Dr Ngozi Okoronkwo, the state Commissioner for Health, expressed her condolences and described the incident as a very sad one. She stated that she had visited the hospital to see the injured students and confirmed that their injuries were not too serious.

Regarding the cause of the accident, the Abia commissioner stated that the students were driving a Toyota Camry when a tire burst, which led to the driver losing control and hitting a tree by the roadside.
