SSANU, NASU, NAATS ends warning strike, resumes Monday

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational Associated Institutions, and the National Association of Academic Technologists of the University has announced the conclusion of the ongoing seven-day and three-day warning strike by midnight, Sunday, respectively.

For approximately a month, JAC of SSANU and NASU has been drawing attention to its exclusion from the payment of withheld salaries, which were being disbursed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities starting in February.

The salaries of these unions were withheld when the former administration of President Muhammadu Buhari implemented a ‘No Work, No Pay policy’ against ASUU, SSANU, and NAATS, who were engaged in strikes lasting eight months, four months, and five-and-a-half months, respectively, in 2022.

NAATS also joined the strike and initiated its three-day warning strike on Wednesday.

In a Zoom meeting with journalists on Sunday, the National President of JAC of SSANU and NASU, Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim, announced that all the unions would resume normal work on Monday.

Nevertheless, he expressed concern that the government had not yet addressed the unions’ demands.

Ibrahim stated in a Sunday statement, “Consequently, you are hereby informed that the seven-day warning strike shall end at midnight on Sunday, March 24, 2024, and normal work will resume on Monday, March 25, 2024.” He added that the Federal Government had not paid the non-teaching staff and that a meeting with the National Executive Council would be convened to determine the next course of action.
