Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP), recently explained his absence at the party's National Convention in Anambra State. In a public statement, Obi clarified that his focus is on rebuilding Nigeria, rather than creating a new political party.
During his appearance on X Space, hosted by Parallel Facts on Friday, Obi stated that the LP leadership, under Julius Abure, failed to engage in proper consultation with key stakeholders before embarking on the convention. He emphasized the need for the party to take the appropriate steps to get back on track, stating that his priority is to build a better Nigeria, rather than a new Labour Party.
Obi also expressed his support for the "Obedient" movement, indicating that it is standard practice for movements to form themselves into blocs and participate in the political process around the world.
The LP has been embroiled in a power struggle between two factional groups led by Julius Abure and Apapa Lamidi, respectively. The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has opposed Abure's leadership of the party. Despite this, Abure was reelected during the highly controversial national convention held in Anambra State.
