Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue emphasized that the local government councils are mandated to function as the third tier of government in the state, delivering essential services to the grassroots population under his leadership.

Alia made this assertion during the commencement of a two-day workshop for Local Government Caretaker Committees, Director-General, Services and Administration (DGSA), and Treasurers in Makurdi on Monday.

He stated that all 23 local government councils in the state have been accorded full autonomy. Alia underscored the need for the local government councils to operate as the third tier of government, as stipulated in the constitution, with complete autonomy.

Emphasizing the importance of accountability and transparency, Alia highlighted the necessity for the local government administration to adhere to the rule of law at all times. The governor further stressed the imperative for the local government councils to maintain accurate and transparent records for auditors and anti-graft agencies. He also urged the local council chairpersons to prioritize the identification and execution of projects directly benefiting the community.

The local government councils must redouble their efforts to increase Internally Generated Revenue at the grassroots and ensure that such funds are used appropriately. It is crucial for the chairpersons to be present at their duty posts and address the issues within their jurisdiction.

The state is eagerly anticipating the distribution of fuel subsidy removal palliative from the Federal Government.

During his welcome speech, the Special Adviser to the governor on Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr. Dennis Akura, praised the governor for organizing a workshop aimed at enhancing the capabilities of the local government councils administrators.

Akura emphasized that this training signifies a proactive approach to enhancing governance at the grassroots level.

"Your commitment to implementing the administration's transformation agenda, including the establishment of an effective local government system, is vital for driving positive change across the 23 local government areas."

"Permit me to appreciate your commitment to local government staff welfare including pensions and gratuity. As the arrow head of the third tier, we will never disappoint you. It's evident that the administration is committed to fostering a conducive environment for sustainable development and progress.

"I look forward to your active participation in the workshop, and am optimistic that it would add valuable insights that can be applied to your daily administrative responsibilities. Let us collectively strive to make the most of this training opportunity for the betterment of our communities and the state as a whole," he said
