During the episcopal ordination of Most Reverend Thomas Ifeanyichukwu Obiatuegwu as auxiliary Bishop designate of the Diocese, the President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, called on President Bola Tinubu to consider adopting a civil remedy to address the issue of insecurity in the Southeast region of the country.
The event, which drew over 40 Catholic bishops, clergies, politicians, business moguls, as well as parishioners, was held at the Catholic Diocese of Orlu, in Imo state. Archbishop Ugorji expressed gratitude to Governor Hope Uzodimma for taking measures to ensure the safety of Imo State citizens and to those who attended the event despite the security challenges in the Southeast.
In his address, Archbishop Ugorji noted that the Southeast has been plagued by insecurity, with the sit-at-home order further exacerbating the economic and social lives of the people.
The repeated outcry in the Southeast has caused the loss of billions of naira for business operators, and many poor families are afraid to come out on Mondays. Therefore, Archbishop Ugorji appealed to President Tinubu to explore civil remedies to release Nnamdi Kanu in order to restore economic and social stability to the Southeast.
Governor Uzodimma, on the other hand, emphasized the importance of the church in socialization, as it is one of the most influential agents after the family and school.
Despite the church's achievements, Governor Uzodimma expressed his concern that as the church grows, so does criminality. He suggested that the church should do more to impact enduring moral lessons on the faithful. He also noted that the current state of affairs in Nigeria should be a serious concern to all.
